What Does a Typical Bush Kinder Session Look Like?
Each Bush Kinder session begins at 9:00am at Inglewood Childcare & Kindergarten.
Before heading off, children prepare for the adventure by placing their drink bottles and lunchboxes into the Bush Kinder esky, using the bathroom if needed, applying sunscreen, putting on their hats, and gathering together for a group discussion.
During this time, educators talk with the children about the day ahead, what they are excited to explore, and the importance of staying safe. Together, we discuss road safety, respecting the environment, and understanding the designated Bush Kinder boundaries.
Once everyone has arrived, children pair up with a buddy and walk together with their educators to our Bush Kinder location.
When we arrive, children are reminded of the boundaries before being given the freedom to play, investigate, create, discover, imagine, and connect with the natural world around them. Every session offers something different as children follow their own interests and curiosity.
As children become more confident in the environment, we will gradually introduce new experiences such as building and safely using a campfire, cooking over the fire, and learning practical outdoor skills under close educator supervision.
After plenty of time exploring, everyone gathers together to wash their hands, enjoy a healthy snack, chat about their discoveries, and reflect on the morning before walking back to kindergarten.
Every visit is unique, shaped by the seasons, the weather, and the children's interests.

Why Bush Kinder?
Bush Kinder is much more than outdoor play. It is an extension of our philosophy and aligns closely with both the Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF) and the Queensland Kindergarten Learning Guideline (QKLG), which recognise the outdoors as a rich environment for open-ended learning, exploration, creativity, and supported risk-taking.
As author John Medina reminds us:
"We are prewired to explore and investigate."
Natural environments inspire curiosity in ways that simply cannot be replicated indoors.

Safety is Our Priority
The wellbeing of every child is at the heart of our Bush Kinder program.
Children play only within clearly defined boundaries that are introduced and walked together at the beginning of every session. Educators and parent helpers are positioned throughout the area to supervise children, and everyone wears high-visibility vests.
If a child accidentally moves beyond the designated boundary, educators use a whistle signal to stop all children immediately while the child is safely guided back into the play area.
We carefully plan every session to ensure children can confidently explore while learning to assess and manage age-appropriate risks in a safe and supportive environment.
Bush Kinder in All Seasons
Nature changes every day, and so does our learning.
Bush Kinder operates in almost all weather conditions because every season offers valuable learning opportunities. Sessions will only be cancelled if there are forecasts of extreme heat, strong wind warnings, or electrical storms.
Families are encouraged to dress children appropriately for the weather. If accessing suitable outdoor clothing is difficult, please speak with our team. We are building a shared collection of jackets, boots, and waterproof gear to support every child participating comfortably.
Should a session need to be cancelled due to weather, families will be notified by 6:00pm the evening before via a push notification on OWNA, please note this will disappear when opened. It will also be posted on the OWNA news feed.

Frequently Asked Questions
What should I pack?
Children bring their entire lunchbox to Bush Kinder. Because lunchboxes are not refrigerated during the excursion, we recommend packing foods that travel well, such as sandwiches, fruit, cheese, and crackers. An insulated lunchbox is helpful but not essential.
How many educators attend?
Three educators attend every Bush Kinder session, and parents and carers are warmly welcomed to join us as helpers.
How is toileting managed?
A private toilet tent and portable toilet are available on site. An educator supports children as needed while maintaining privacy and dignity.
Can I contact staff during Bush Kinder?
Absolutely. A dedicated kindergarten mobile phone accompanies every session, the number is 0423 199 031
Can I volunteer?
Yes! We love having parent helpers join us. It's a wonderful opportunity to experience Bush Kinder alongside your child and see the learning unfold firsthand.

Learning Beyond the Classroom
Research consistently demonstrates that children who regularly learn outdoors develop stronger confidence, resilience, problem-solving abilities, social skills, and emotional wellbeing.
Bush Kinder allows children to revisit familiar natural spaces week after week, building confidence as they notice seasonal changes, make new discoveries, develop friendships, and strengthen their connection with both nature and their local community.
At Inglewood Childcare & Kindergarten, Bush Kinder is about giving children the time, space, and freedom to wonder, explore, take supported risks, and discover just how capable they truly are.
We can't wait to share these wonderful adventures with our families. If you have any questions about the program, please don't hesitate to speak with Miss Jade, Miss Jess, or Miss Emma. We'd love to chat about how Bush Kinder can support your child's learning journey.
